The Archibald Family Story
“Our first visit to the Idaho Ronald McDonald House was in August of 2017. We arrived a few days early to start Christian’s pre-op routine and to just get settled in. We stayed for 3 nights, and spent the remainder of the week in the hospital together. At first I thought it would feel weird to be in a communal living space with a bunch of strangers, but what I quickly discovered is that the support of the staff and other understanding families is just what we needed. We have been back close to a dozen times for follow-up surgeries, tests, and appointments since that first trip to Boise.
Looking back on our many visits, I realize how special the House is. The staff lets us vent, never shying away from sharing the stress of our situation and offering us words of encouragement. We always feel welcomed; from the moment we walk in the door, we feel comfort and peace. Staying in the House allowed us to raid the kitchen in the middle of the night an hour before we had to cut off food for surgery the next morning (and have an impromptu game of hide and seek). The staff regularly fills my purse with snacks each visit so I remember to take care of myself and eat at the hospital, and many times we’re sent home with fresh cookies to snack on for the 5-hour drive.
The House provides us with a place to stay, which helps us financially, and the staff encourages us to have fun times in the midst of some of the darkest days. We visit the aquarium every trip; even when Christian has a tough visit, the staff reminds him that there is still time to go. When we arrive to our room, there is always a stuffed animal waiting for Christian to help him stay brave during whatever lies ahead for him.
The House makes sure that every need we could have is met, even before we realize it is a need. They don’t just provide shelter and meals; they provide a support system and a home-away-from-home for families just like ours.
We are so very blessed to have such a special place to ease our burdens when there is so much stress and anxiety in our lives. I am so excited that Ronald McDonald House Charities of Idaho has opened a space to serve families in the Eastern Idaho area. Our entire family, Christian especially, is eager to provide some love and support to others the same way that we have been loved and supported in the last few years by the people of Boise.”

With a growing population and increased specialized pediatric care, demand for our programs continues to grow. This is why we recently added a Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart in the Magic Valley and opened a Ronald McDonald Family Room in Idaho Falls to support families at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. We are also in the process of building a new Idaho Ronald McDonald House in Boise, projected to open in February of 2020, to support more than three times as many families.
When you donate to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Idaho, you are providing comfort and peace experienced by families just like the Archibald family. Your donation can turn into a hot beverage and snacks for families during long days at the hospital, groceries to keep the fridge stocked so families don’t have to spend money on food, or a warm, cozy bed so families can stay well rested and put all their energy into their sick child. Help us provide the love and support families of sick children need, when they need it most. Please make your donation today.
