Volunteer Appreciation Month—Erika Curtiss, Ruth Gibbons, and Regence

2026 Volunteer Spotlight - Erika, Ruth, and Regence

For over 20 years, Regence BlueShield of Idaho has supported Ronald McDonald House Charities of Idaho and the families we serve. It is through that connection that Erika Curtiss and Ruth Gibbons first got involved at the House. They have now been volunteering for around five years and have been enjoying making meals for families whose children are receiving medical care in Boise. Ruth shared, “It’s a really great cause to be able to support, and it just feels really good to help out those families that are staying there.”

Ruth’s connection to the mission comes from her own experience. Her son required multiple surgeries, which meant traveling far from home and relying on a Ronald McDonald House for support. “It means a lot to have a place to go where you can, eat food, relax, and not have to worry.” She says, “It’s enough stress and worry to have to deal with a kid that’s in the hospital and all that comes with that.”  That perspective continues to shape the care she brings to each volunteer shift.

Erika was drawn to volunteering after moving to Idaho and looking for ways to get involved. It has become something she looks forward to. “I really try to make a point of doing it each month,” she said. She has even shared the experience with her daughter, helping pass on the importance of community involvement.

Together, Ruth, Erika, and their team bring thoughtfulness into every breakfast they prepare. From egg bites to fresh fruit, they consider what will be most helpful for families. “We try to think about foods that would be easy for them to reheat,” Erika shared, recognizing that mornings are often busy and unpredictable.

Their time at the House is often quiet and focused. Many families are preparing for the day ahead, and interactions are brief. Still, the impact is clear. As Erika said, “It is really great when you see the families come up and they’re like, ‘Oh, what are we having for breakfast?’”

Both describe volunteering as rewarding and grounding. “I find it very rewarding and very therapeutic to be involved,” Erika shared. Ruth echoed that sentiment, adding, “It really is a great sense of community.”

After five years, their commitment remains strong. “It’s an awesome opportunity and one that I look forward to every month,” Ruth said. “I just made it a commitment about what was it five years ago? To just put it on my calendar and just start doing it. I have not regretted that at all.”

We are grateful for Erika, Ruth, and the many corporate volunteers who continue to show up for families. Because of their care and consistency, the House feels more like home.
