Pang Family Story

Pang Family

Nineteen years ago, Chelsea Pang found herself in a moment no parent is ever prepared for. Living in Weiser, Idaho at the time, she went into premature labor with her youngest child. After being rushed to Boise and placed on bed rest, she returned home hoping for more time. Just two weeks later, her son Keanu was born eight weeks early.

At first, everything seemed okay. Then he started to struggle to breathe as his lungs had not fully developed. He was quickly transported to the NICU at St. Luke’s in Boise. Chelsea, who had just given birth, was released from the hospital so she could follow him. At the same time, her two young children, just four and five years old, remained back in Weiser with family.

It was a time filled with fear, uncertainty, and the heavy pull of being in two places at once. Chelsea remembers the emotional weight of caring for a newborn in critical condition while worrying about her other children at home. When a hospital social worker helped connect her family with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Idaho, everything changed.

Having a place to stay close to the hospital brought comfort during one of the most difficult times in her life. Her husband and children were able to be near her, and she could walk back and forth between the House and the NICU. That closeness made all the difference. Even though their stay was brief, about five to seven days, the impact has lasted a lifetime. “It made things a lot less stressful,” Chelsea shared. “To have my family close was something I’ll never forget.”

Today, Keanu is a healthy 19-year-old. What was once a frightening chapter has become a story of resilience, gratitude, and giving back. Chelsea now serves as a store manager for Walmart in Meridian, where she has worked for 17 years, having first started as a part-time deli associate. What began as a small step outside of her role as a mom turned into a career, thanks to hard work and leaders who saw her potential and encouraged her to grow.

Through her role at Walmart, Chelsea has found meaningful ways to support families walking a path similar to her own. She leads efforts to give back to the Ronald McDonald House, organizing donations, coordinating volunteer teams, and responding quickly when urgent needs arise. Whether it is gathering everyday essentials like cereal, snacks, paper goods, or stepping in to provide something unexpected, like a new grill for families to use, Chelsea makes sure support is there when it matters most.

For her, this work is deeply personal. She does not just share what the House does. She shares why it matters. “It’s life changing,” she said. “I can tell people from my own experience what that kind of support means.” Each year, her store also dedicates time to volunteer, bringing a team to the House to serve meals, help with cleaning, or meet whatever needs families may have. It is a way to turn gratitude into action and to make sure current families feel the same care she once received.

Looking back, Chelsea describes her experience as both difficult and meaningful. The fear of those early days has not been forgotten, but neither has the kindness. “There was somebody out there that cared,” she said. “We were treated like we were going through something hard, and that meant everything.”

Stories like Chelsea’s are a powerful reminder that the impact of a stay at the Ronald McDonald House or Family Room does not end when a family goes home. It continues in the lives they build, the ways they give back, and the hope they offer to others. Nineteen years later, Chelsea is still carrying that experience forward. Through her leadership, her generosity, and her willingness to share her story, she is helping ensure that families facing their hardest days feel supported, cared for, and never alone.

Thank you, Chelsea, and thank you, Walmart, for your support!
